II International Congress of Donkey MedicineUntil quite recently, donkeys had a central role in Western cultures, helping thousands of people to accomplish their daily tasks, mainly in the countryside. However, their value was seldom acknowledged, as proven by the fact that they are still frequently considered to be the noble horses’ inferior relatives. Thankfully, such representations are changing, as more and more owners see their animals as companions that deserve affection and quality of life.
Thus, the II International Congress of Donkey Medicine, proposed by AEPGA and AEMV-UTAD, represents one more step to dignify the donkey and to, therefore, tackle the lack of specialized training in the area among veterinary medicine students and professionals. From the 31st of October to the 2nd of November, several acknowledged specialists, as well as young researchers, will be sharing their work experience, thus contributing to the education of everyone who is interested in the subject. The congress will take place at Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), in Vila Real, Portugal.
By strengthening and sharing scientific knowledge about donkeys, we are not just building up the base of their quality of life – we are also, finally, paying them the attention they deserve.
